Feminist careers: International development

Feminist careers: International development

What different motivations do we have for our chosen career paths? Is it possible to work within a ‘feminist framework’?

A passing conversation several years ago with a feminist gynaecologist left Astute Radio presenter Sarah Pelham curious about the relationship between career choice, values and beliefs.

For the second episode in the Feminist in Conversation series, Sarah interviews Marieke Fröhlich, a young feminist starting out on a career in international development. German-born, Marieke has spent the last four years living and studying in South Africa.

Marieke discusses her experience as an intern with medica mondiale, a non-governmental organisation based in Germany, which supports traumatised women and girls in war and crisis zones throughout the world.

More broadly, Sarah and Marieke explore the complexities of development work as a feminist located in the so-called ‘developed’ world. What’s problematic with development work? Can this be overcome?
